School Information

At Bishop’s Stortford College, we have built a wonderful, busy, jaunty,
sometimes quirky, often highly successful community. This is what makes us
tick. Within this environment your child’s personal journey of discovery will
begin the moment they join us.

Our school offers the whole package: breadth of opportunity, depth of
academic enquiry, quality of human values and skills, all within a future oriented climate of endeavour that recognises tomorrow more than yesterday.

Qualifications and Qualities
Academic qualifications are a prime focus for us, yet we know that
qualifications alone will not suffice for a life fully lived. Human qualities of
decency and kindness are also a large part of the ticket to success. Together,
qualifications and qualities are what an education for today and tomorrow
must deliver.
We provide specialist subject teachers throughout our Pre-Prep, Prep and
Senior Schools and know that very good teachers at this very formative age
have a very noticeable effect. We are selective based on academic ability,
yet despite this, our value-added score is probably one of the best in the
country. We are consistently in the top 8% nationally meaning that our
school makes the greatest difference.

Breadth and Balance
From whatever age your child joins us, life will be busy. They will be doing
lots of different things, learning how to prioritise – to take charge of what
they are doing and when. But even more importantly, your child will quickly
find things they enjoy and become good at.
When they leave us, they will be well prepared for life beyond school, with
a combination of abilities, some social, some academic and with choices
– choices as to where to direct their efforts and enthusiasm. They will also
have the confidence of knowing how to function in the new world that we
are all going to embrace.

Community Spirit
We recognise the world your child will be entering and the skills they need.
Learning to collaborate, to be a team player, to become friends with diverse,
different people, will happen. Here there is a togetherness where none of us
is as important as all of us.
The diversity of backgrounds, nationalities and ages of our pupils ensures
horizons are expanded and everyone learns together and from each other.

“We do not look like most schools of our type. We
are different in some important ways. We are the
modern face of independent education.

Student Profile

Name: Edgar Age: 17 years Nationality: Latvian Started at Bishop’s Stortford College: 16 years Study: AS levels in Art, History, Economics and Media Studies Why did you choose to come and study in the UK? I had decided I wanted to study film and media. I could go to Russia, the US or England but I decided on UK as first choice because the senior schools, and the art and drama, are good. The country is interesting too and multicultural. I chose a good college with great media opportunities. When I visited the school on the open morning it reminded me of Harry Potter; the chapel, the history, it is very different compared to my previous school which has just celebrated twenty years. Bishop’s Stortford College is so established with traditions that still work now. What was important to you when looking at schools? We began by taking the top 300 ranked schools. I wanted a co-educational school and after that, I looked at the art and media opportunities. I also wanted a school with a swimming pool. Then I researched the websites. I found this school’s website was really good because it was so detailed, it even told me what’s on the breakfast menu! What are the benefits of studying at a boarding school? You learn English really quickly. I could never learn the language so quickly if I wasn’t here. It’s very useful, especially when considering my future. There are so many different cultures and nationalities and you can appreciate that. It has been a good experience for me to mix in with other people from lots of different countries and nationalities. How did you find settling in as a boarder? I have never boarded before I came to the UK. Missing all of my friends was a factor as to whether I would leave and I thought making new friends would be hard. I was on my own for about half and hour only before about eight people came into my room. By the end of the first day I had four or five friends. They really looked after me. They said “If you need something, just ask”. It takes a few months to break the English barrier, even if you’re English is a good level, you have to think so fast. What sort of sports and activities are you involved in? Sport is really important and there are so many sports to choose from. I played hockey this year. In Latvia, we play hockey on ice and my friends laughed when I told them that hockey is played on grass in England. I swim every day and I’m in the 1st team. Next year I want to try rugby and cricket. Photography and cinematics are my main interests. In my first term here, I entered a Young Photographer of the Year competition run by the local newspaper and Rotary Club and won. It was really good for me. What do you do in the holidays? I go to London to meet my girlfriend. London is good. I go to exhibitions and see lots of films at the cinema. I like to go to photo exhibitions and have been to the British Museum a few times too. I like going to Cambridge too. In what ways have you changed since you started boarding? The boarding experience makes you stronger. It is important to be able to work and live together even if you are different because of nationality or your views on life. I have become more tolerant of people. I’m more independent as I haven’t got my parents around me all the time now. I’ve had lots of opportunities to make myself a better person. I miss my parents but because technology has really improved, it is not a problem at all as I can e-mail or phone them. I often get to see my parents anyway. Friends also come to see me too. What do you like best about being a boarder? Mixing with the community and living in it, and mixing with lots of nationalities and meeting different people. Seeing different nationalities integrating with each other and coming together. There are lots of opportunities to do this, which is great. It is like a model of real life but on a small scale. You have to build relationships.
